It may soon be easier for foreign startup entrepreneurs to set up shop in the United States thanks to immigration reform which would create a specialized startup visa program. The proposed program would make more visas available to entrepreneurs who have at least $250,000 in funding from a U.S.-based venture capital firm, or $100,000 in angel funding. The startup must also have plans to either create five new jobs every two years, raise at least $1 million every two years, or generate at least $1 million in revenue. Sponsor The current system grants 10,000 visas each year primarily to investors that have financed over $1 million with plans to create at least 10 full-time positions. It also allows lower benchmarks for investors in less wealthy countries. However, the new requirements – which are part of a bill proposed by Colorado Congressman Jared Polis (above) – would fall far beneath the current benchmarks, making it easier for smaller companies and those from underprivileged countries to create jobs in America. The idea is the brainchild of programmer, essayist and Y Combinator partner Paul Graham who first wrote of what he called “the founder visa” in April of 2009. In some cases, inspired entrepreneurs enter the U.S., but after their ideas flourish and their visas run out they are in danger of being forced to go home to start their businesses. Investor, entrepreneur and co-founder of Foundry Group , Brad Feld experienced this first-hand at the TechStars program in Boulder, Colorado this summer as two of the ten groups had foreign founders. “Over the summer we struggled to figure out ways to get them Visas – all of the proposed approaches were expensive, risky, and tiresome,” Feld says. “Both companies are still trying, but each are now seriously considering returning to their home countries to build their businesses.” Along with other entrepreneurs, start-up advisors and venture capital investors, Feld has co-founded StartupVisa.com , a homepage Feld says has been a resource for the movement inspired by Paul Graham’s vision. “In the next few months, we’ll be expanding it aggressively to incorporate grass roots support and feedback,” he told ReadWriteWeb. One of StartupVisa’s contributors, Manu Kumar, helps spread the word about visa reform by recounting his own struggles. “There were multiple points at which I came very close to having to leave the United States because of the visa issues,” says Kumar. As the country attempts to pull itself out of one of the largest recessions in history, it only seems logical to make it as easy as possible for foreign entrepreneurs to enter the country and create jobs for Americans. “I think this would have such a visible effect on the economy that it would make the legislator who introduced the bill famous,” says Graham. “The only way to know for sure would be to try it, and that would cost practically nothing. Ever since two friends and I staged a two-week jaunt around the Midwest to attend a great new conference earlier this year, I’ve been more and more aware of a growing trend: the social media road trip. While on the road this year, I’ve come upon long-term social media road warriors such as Mark Simonds of the Twitter Road Trip , brand ambassadors such as Sara Lopez and conference-hoppers such as Dave Delaney . I think we’ve all heard about Tara Hunt’s widely publicized karaoke/book promo tour . There’s even a SxSWi session about the phenomenon this spring. For folks intent on packing up the hardware and hitting the road, here are ten tips for success. Sponsor These road trips are great for making new connections with interesting people and forming mutually beneficial relationships, as my RoadTwip gang did in Nashville . They’re great for finally meeting up with longtime (or not so longtime) online friends in real life, as we did in Toledo . They can give a person some perspective on tech ” scenes ,” especially in terms of engendering respect for non-Silicon Valley communities. Even better, it’s great for brands, as our friend Sara Lopez has learned this year while tripping around for soymilk company 8th Continent. Ford recognized the public’s fascination with road trip-related media with its highly successful Fiesta campaign this year, which involved mini-trips and missions documented on YouTube. These trips capture a great audience, both regionally with one-on-one interactions in communities and internationally as curious and amused Internet users stumble upon and share related content. More on that later. As promised, here are ten must-haves for planning and executing a successful social media road trip. 1. Get sponsorship. Remember the part where I told you that social media road trips are great for brands? These days, brands are often more than willing to help a geek out with gas money, hardware, goods and services in exchange for a little light plugging now and then. If there’s a good fit between your trip and a brand, from soft drinks to software , don’t hesitate to ask for a partnership. 2. Plan for WiFi. This might be your biggest challenge. Whether you’re using Bluetooth, a MiFi device, a USB-connected wireless modem or simply tethering to your mobile phone, make sure your preferred method works and that you have a backup. We also recommend downloading WeFi in case your plans fail and you need to find emergency coffee house WiFi in a strange place. 3. Have a mission and destination. One great piece of advice my road team got from NorthStar Manifesto founder Duke Stump was to define our purpose before our itinerary. Another important part of these trips can be a geographical highlight, such as a conference, a hometown or a tech hub. It’ll solidify your position and help you focus your content. 4. Meet everyone and go everywhere. Part of the excitement of a social media road trip is accepting unexpected invitations and discovering friends in strangers. Entering into situations with an open mind is the best way to use your trip as a learning experience. While on the road, I met up with just about everyone I could, and I got to see amazing new hardware, apps, innovators and entrepreneurs as a result. 5. Plan for power. Power is up there with WiFi as one of the primary pain points of being on the road. We recommend packing extra battery units and chargers (you lose them at home, and you’ll most certainly lose them on the road). Definitely invest in a 12V adapter so you can charge devices while mobile, but know that one adapter may only charge a certain number or type of device. E.g., mine can handle a laptop, an iPod, and a curling iron, but on two laptops, it blows a fuse. And yes, you’ll want to pick up a pack of fuses for your 12V adapter, too. More tech and media tips coming right up on page two. 6. Deviate from your plan, map and schedule. Some of the best moments of my own social media road trips were completely unplanned. Get curious, pull over now and then, make a few extra stops and definitely get in touch with new people. Although it’s vital to have a timeline for your travels, don’t forget to smell the roses; great opportunities will present themselves when you allow for serendipity. 7. Make content creation your job. The biggest difference between a social media road trip and a non-geek vacation is the work you’ll put into creating and publishing content. You’ll be pumping out pics, videos, tweets, blog posts, live video chats and every kind of app update imaginable while you’re on the road. You need to do this well and consistently. Make sure you’ve got the hardware and software for the job, and since your time on the road is limited, prioritize posting content over lame stuff like eating and sleeping, which isn’t really bloggable, anyhow. (Just kidding – but you know what we mean.) 8. Make sure your network works. This section isn’t (only) an AT&T slam. Almost any network can let a user down in the uninhabited wilds of Iowa. If you’re traveling with buddies, it can help to have a diverse representation of networks in case one person’s cell reception fails in a critical moment. Also, not all WiFi devices will work all over the country; for example, Cricket’s wireless Internet connection devices only work in certain major metro areas. Check with your provider to make sure your network is going to be reliable for your entire route. 9. Plan for mobile site and server maintenance. If you are the kind of geek who runs one or several websites or your own servers, you’ll want to keep an eye on your babies while away from home. For this item, it’s all about the SSH . Get a client that jives with your mobile , and as with every other tech solution we’ve recommended so far, test it before you drive off into the sunset. 10. Use an aggregator to push mobile updates all over the place. Whether you’re using a service like PixelPipe or something more like FriendFeed , you’re going to want your content to get all over the tubes without your having to duplicate your efforts. Test out some solutions for one-click, cross-site publishing of pics, posts and videos, and be sure it’ll be quick and simple from your mobile device. Those are the words of wisdom I can offer right now, and probably what I’ll be sharing at SxSW in a few months. You’d think it was odd if you called me for directions and I told you to go 0.2 miles southeast and make a slight right onto Old Route 17. You’d expect me to say something more like, “Start driving away from the library and take the second right just after the McDonald’s.” Google Maps India has just launched a hybridized version of directions that give geographically accurate distances and directions as well as landmarks most humans would also recognize. We can imagine this coming to the rural U.S. and Google telling us to “follow that-there little jog in the road where the big oak tree used to be before Jimmy Ray hit it with his daddy’s combine, bless his heart, for 2.3 miles.” Sponsor Although most urban Americans are comfortable navigating by street signs, in other parts of our country and the rest of the world, landmarks are a necessity in successfully reaching one’s destination. Other times, it’s simply reassuring to know that you haven’t actually missed a turn or your destination because you haven’t yet passed a given landmark. How many times has someone told you on the phone to “keep going straight until you pass the shopping center” or something of that sort, and it saved you a missed turn as well as a general sense of anxiety? In the words of UX Googler Olga Khroustaleva , “We found that using landmarks in directions helps for two simple reasons: they are easier to see than street signs and they are easier to remember than street names… Sometimes there are simply too many signs to look at, and the street sign drowns in the visual noise. A good landmark always stands out.” The point of the whole experiment was to give drivers a sense of confidence when exploring new territory. Ultimately, the Google team found that a combination of street names and distances as well as landmarks gave the best results and best satisfied users. Sree Unnikrishnan and Manik Gupta wrote on the Google India blog, “This effort was possible thanks to the large amount of landmark data that users like you contributed through Google Map Maker. The National Venture Capital Association released its annual survey of VC predicitons for next year this morning and it doesn’t look good for small startup companies. Though most VCs said they expected more money to be invested next year, most predicted a contraction in the number of firms available to invest, a decrease in seed and early-stage funding and an emphasis on large sums invested in more established companies seeking further growth. That’s not good for early-stage innovation, something the Association acknowledges in its published report. Sponsor The survey was based on responses from more than 325 venture capitalists across the United States. 45 percent of respondents predicting growth in Early and Seed stage investments. “Of all the predictions put forth this year, a collective lack of enthusiasm for seed and early stage investing is the most concerning,” said Mark Heesen, president of the NVCA. “The weak exit market combined with proposed tax policy which would discourage long term investment puts tremendous pressure on our industry to move towards later stage investing. Yet, seed and early stage companies represent a pipeline that must be supported if our country is to continue building new and innovative companies. We need the environment to improve for these early stage investors.” If you’re one of those cynics that thinks the VC industry funds too many crazy pointless ideas, then perhaps this reads like good news. If you’re a small startup hoping to break into the Silicon Valley insider’s club that is VC funding, then this probably isn’t good news for you. And if you’re an early adopter of new technologies, hungry to see all kinds of innovation change the world and indifferent to the fortunes of investors – then this risk aversion probably isn’t good news for you either. While many choose to focus on the negative aspects of real-time technologies including information overload, Epelboin offers a positive view of how the real-time web offers French netizens an effective tool for political commentary. In our yearly wrap-ups of the best products of 2009 , we cannot but notice the shadow that falls over the editorial desk. We are chilled and saddened by the ghosts of the past year – the apps that should have been, the startups that failed to launch, the brilliant ideas that were throttled, the great minds that were fired, the tech heroes that committed tragic gaffes. But some failures were so monumental that they require specific enumeration and commentary. Here are the 10 worst tech failures of 2009. Sponsor Google Wave Sucked This is one case where the hype was as noisy as the app – and both were deafening. We have to hand it to Google’s publicity team; we don’t know one geek who wasn’t positively salivating for a Wave invite. The ReadWriteWeb back channel was a complete melee when the first invites were rolled out to team members. But once we got there and saw the new tech tricks, like watching one another type, we started thinking about use cases. And the more we struggled to understand and use this product, the more frustrated and bored we became. Blame it on the steep learning curve. Blame it on our misunderstanding the product. Mount whatever feeble defense you like, but techies know Wave was a flop. The TabletPads Went to the Deadpool All we wanted was a $200-500 flat piece of glass and plastic with some fancy gizmodgery inside so we could look at the Internet from the comfort of our couches. And what did we get? Rumors, Photoshopped gadget porn, promises – lies, all lies. We’d have been better off if we’d spent those months drawing the Yahoo! home page on an Etch-A-Sketch. Although the Crunchpad has resurfaced as the JooJoo , the price has been marked up considerably, and the whole project just seems wrong to us now. Moreover, five will get you ten that Michael Arrington, father of the Crunchpad and a former attorney, is fixing to get litigious right about now, which might significantly delay the product’s appearance on the market. Powerset Resurfaced as Bing In 2008, Powerset was one of the stealthiest, sexiest startups on the Silicon Valley block. About five minutes after launching, Powerset got snatched up by Microsoft to the tune of $100 million. When everyone had retrieved their dentures from the ground and changed their pants, they noticed that Powerset’s ever-so-sexy tech had been folded quietly into the Borg for assimilation. And about a year later, Bing was born, reportedly from the tech that Microsoft scraped off the infant carcass of Powerset. And Bing sucked. We had such high hopes. Twitter Failed to Innovate While some of us had our money on a Twitter sale in 2009, others were simply waiting for the company to debut a radical, interesting, mutually beneficial revenue model. At the very least, most users were hoping that the scalability issues and downtime that made Twitter the tragic heroine of 2008 would be put to rest. Twitter’s failures this year were less about the headlines they made than the ones they didn’t make. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, Twitter didn’t capitalize on their massive adoption increase (a.k.a., their Oprahtization) and sell. Worse yet, they didn’t buy. When one recalls the purchase of Summize and then contrasts it with this year’s explosion of excellent Twitter apps, one wonders why none of these small startups or one-off side projects were acquired. Perhaps this was a case of “Hey, we can do that!” as Twitter certainly seemed intent on pilfering features (such as lists and retweets) from third-party developers. Too bad the “official” Twitter features suck a lot more than the original third-party designs. But worst of all, we are still consistently experiencing downtime at a level that is unacceptable for any major web app. Google couldn’t get away with this kind of failure; why should Twitter be allowed to do so? The Great Firewall of China Drama Continued and Worsened To date, China’s “Golden Shield Project” restrictions on Internet use are throttling traffic from that country to websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Bing, and many, many more. Banned sites include news organizations that cover controversial events, pro-democracy sites and blogs, any site acknowledging the existence of Taiwan, YouTube, most blogging websites (WordPress, Blogger, etc.) and anything the government deems to be obscene or profane. In countries where creative self expression and the ability to browse, learn and make decisions independently are freedoms too often taken for granted, these restrictions are indeed unthinkable. The project began in 1998 and still made plenty of headlines this year for its renewed affronts to freedom on the Internet. For example, in June, the Chinese government announced it would be rolling out censorship software on every new computer sold in the country. Microsoft Dumped Don Dodge Not too long ago, we at ReadWriteWeb were shocked to learn from startup guru and longtime Microsoft ambassador Don Dodge that the Big M had given him the kiss-off. Dodge was seen by many as an intelligent, approachable personality in front of a huge, out-of-touch, unpopular brand. It was the tech industry equivalent of FOX cancelling the Simpsons. It’s been noted that Microsoft makes its paper from the enterprise, not startups, which would make Dodge a natural candidate for the chopping block. Still, the move was hugely criticized by bloggers, VCs and others. Microsoft’s PR plot thickened a few days later when Google snatched up the briefly unemployed Dodge. Spotify Didn’t Launch in the US… Yet It tops our list of Most Highly Anticipated Products Yankees Can’t Get Their Mitts On. Streaming music service Spotify is changing the world – with the exception of the United States. We’ve already got a crowded market of players here, including Pandora, Last.fm and Imeem. Call us greedy, but we want the new hotness that is Spotify, too. The Web 1.0 Comeback Campaigns Were Embarrassing to Watch Now, we at ReadWriteWeb have no desire to kick a company when it’s down, but a couple of the mastodons of the mid-nineties dotcom boom have been valiantly attempting to stage comebacks, some more successfully than others. Yahoo! did some good things for developers this year, but AOL/Aol’s rebranding was pitiful. And don’t get Dana Oshiro started on the affront to end-user dignity that is Friendster. Oracle Acquired MySQL Open-source geeks have been sporting metaphorical black armbands for the loss of MySQL, the world’s largest open-source database, to Oracle, the largest pay-to-play database, following that company’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems. We reported last week that MySQL usage is expected to drop by around 10 percent over the next 5 years. Here’s another handy stat: Oracle also this year raised their own prices by 40 percent . Will MySQL remain free-as-in-beer and open source? Or will it succumb to corporate lameness? And the Worst Fail of 2009… LeapFish Made a God-Awful Promotional Video Tonight, we dine in hell! LeapFish’s bombastic promo clip (which you have to watch in 10-second segments to avoid waves of misplaced inspiration alternating with waves of nausea) is as horrifying as the company itself is sketchy . The startup says it made $10 million before it even launched, and the CEO Ben Behrouzi is an infamous contrepreneur with a background in lead generation and threatening employees .
