FluidApp is what’s called a Single Site Browser and is a great way to pull key websites you use throughout the day out of your primary browser and onto your Mac dashboard as standalone applications. It’s super easy for anyone to use. The service has a thriving community of users – I have 10 Fluid browsers running on my computer right now and wouldn’t want to work without them. In fact, I’m writing this blog post from Movable Type inside a Fluid Browser. In a quiet mid-December move, FluidApp developer Todd Ditchendorf put “most of the code behind Fluid” up on Github under an open source license. That’s very good news – new developments are already coming fast and furious. If you haven’t checked out Fluid before, now is a great time. Sponsor There’s something magical about the way single site browsers let you use different web apps. They don’t get lost in tabs. They don’t fall prey to browser crashes. You can put a handsome icon in your doc to jump over to them. Windows users looking for a similar experience should check out Bubbles or Mozilla’s Prism . Now that Fluid for the Mac is open source though, it will be very exciting to see what features are added next. Creator Ditchendorf says he has some more exciting plans under his hat but nothing to show off yet. Watch this space. What’s your favorite Fluid App? One of my favorites is LazyFeed . Kynetx offers developers a single platform for building extensions for multiple browsers. Developers write their code in Kynetx’s own rule-based language and the service builds the actual extensions. Originally, Kynetx only supported Firefox and Internet Explorer, but a few days ago , the company also announced support for Google Chrome. Thanks to this, developers can now use Kynetx’s AppBuilder tool to build and deploy custom extensions for the three top browsers that offer a built-in plugin architecture. Sponsor For now, of course, only the Windows version of Chrome supports extensions, but extension support for the OSX and Linux version is scheduled to arrive soon. Kynetx is a universal browser extension that has a few similarities to Greasemonkey . The programming language for the extension is the Kynetx Rule Laguage (KRL) and the company offers an online editor for writing apps on top of Kynetx. We should note that Kynetx doesn’t allow users to build every type of extension. The system is best suited for building plugins that add additional information to a website. Kynetx’s extensions use Action Cards to augment these sites with additional information. One example for such a plugin is this app that reminds users when a company offers a discount through AAA. For some more details about the company, have a look at this video interview Robert Scoble did with the company’s founder and CTO. The company also offers a good tutorial and documentation here . SAP is preparing to launch a potential rival to Google Wave . The application, code-named Constellation, is described as a “virtual war room” where co-workers can collaborate in real-time with information aggregated from different data sources. The cloud-based tool is now in private beta with the code name 12Sprints . The application is being developed by SAP’s Business Objects division. Sponsor Constellation demonstrates once again how much effort is being placed on cloud-based collaboration platforms that pull in disparate data sources, stitched together into one lightweight environment. What’s unique is how these environments are almost separate from the legacy IT infrastructure that at times looks almost antiquated compared to its web-based counterparts in the cloud. That’s the opportunity Google sees with Google Wave, as do other competitors such as PBWorks , MindTouch and a number of other companies looking to bask in the shiny lights of the collaborative universe. According to IDG , which received a demo of the technology, Constellation works best with five to thirty users. There will be the capability to publish to a wider audience through wikis, Sharepoint and other platforms. SAP is also working on an on-premise application, but the initial focus is definitely on the cloud. Users will be able to access their enterprise data by tunneling into the app. For example, buying decisions can be more collaborative as purchasing data can be viewed by a group who can then discuss and make decisions. Applications like what we see with Constellation illustrate how important it is becoming for the enterprise to become more transparent with its information. Email is a data trap. But voice calls can be the same way. Platforms like Constellation open information to a far larger community.
